Launch of Wales National Suicide & Self Harm Prevention Strategy

The Minister will be launching the Wales national suicide and self harm prevention strategy, Talk to Me 2, at an event followed by a forum which will take place on Thursday 16th July 2015 at the All Nations Centre, Cardiff.  Online Registration is now OPEN, please Click HERE to register your attendance.  This will be an All day event from approximately 9:30am - 5:00pm.

Who Should attend?
People from a variety of backgrounds engaged in promoting the health and wellbeing of people in Wales who self harm or are at risk of self harm or suicide. Participants from health, social care, housing, education, justice, transport, town planning, local and national government, help line staff  faith and community organisations or those with personal experience of self harm and those bereaved by suicide will find the launch event informative and provide an opportunity to connect with agencies actively tackling suicide and self harm.

Why should you attend?
Suicide is a significant cause of early mortality, particularly among young and middle aged people but are relevant across the life course. Self harm is a significant cause of unscheduled health care and is an indicator of a significant level of distress among individuals. Tackling the separate but related issues of self harm and suicide are therefore critical components in addressing health and wellbeing among statutory non statutory and community organisations. Talk to Me 2 has recently been the subject of a national consultation it is to be formally launched on the 16th July by the Minister for Health and Social services, it will become the cornerstone for suicide and self harm prevention over the next five years indicating priorities to be addressed at national regional level and local levels. The Launch event will provide the opportunity to gain greater insight into the content of the strategy, the development of regional groups to progress the work, experiences from other UK administrations and the opportunity to network with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds.

Living Streets

Jo Elkington, Development Manager of Living Streets is wanting to connect with local organisations and community groups and has asked for an email introduction to members of the Health, Social Care & Wellbeing Forum as she is interested in talking to organisations that are working on active lifestyles, health and wellbeing with communities in Merthyr Tydfil.

Living Streets, the national charity that promotes walking and walkable streets, is at the initial stages of developing a programme in Wales and are keen to meet organisations with similar objectives within the health and wellbeing agenda to inform our work.

Are you:
o   Already doing work in this area?
o   Interested in walking-related opportunities for your service users?
o   Willing to share best practice?
o   Interested in talking to Living Streets to find out more about what we do?

About Living Streets
Living Streets is the national charity that stands up for pedestrians. At present we are delivering projects in England and Scotland; working in Wales will be new for us. We encourage people to walk, and we work to create safe, attractive, enjoyable streets where it’s great to walk. Our work involves both campaigning and policy advocacy, and delivering projects across our three key theme areas of Communities, Workplaces and Schools. Our Communities work aims to improve the local street environment and encourage more people to walk regularly:

Improving the local street environment
This starts with learning about local communities and why people do not make everyday journeys on foot. our ‘Community Street Audit’ approach supports communities as they identify the issues in their local built environment that prevent them from walking, and supports them in devising solutions. Audit evidence can be used to inform investment in the local area to make improvements identified by the community themselves. The process also encourages volunteer action and intergenerational cooperation.

Encouraging more people to walk
This is about encouraging people to increase their everyday walking, and helping them to form a walking habit. As well as obvious benefits like physical fitness, walking can be beneficial for a range of health conditions, improved mental health, increased confidence, greater independence and reduced social isolation

I attach a couple of leaflets which tell you what we are about with examples of our work – the first attachment is a 2-page summary of a project we delivered with communities across England and the second attachment comes from a project we delivered with older people in Yorkshire.

If you are interested in finding out more about Living Streets, are already doing work in this area, or would like to get involved in some way, then Jo would love to hear from you.

Mental Health First Aid - Two days FREE training provided by New Pathways 14 and 15 July

About the course:

VAMT Third Sector Excellence Awards logoMental health problems are common, especially depression, anxiety and misuse of alcohol and other drugs. One person in four will experience some form of problem with their mental health in the course of a year. There is a stigma associated with mental health problems which may hinder people from seeking help, many people are not well informed and help is not always on hand, especially when the problem first arises. MHFA (Wales) is a 12 hour course developed and supported by the Welsh Government in partnership with other organisations. MHFA has spread to more than 20 countries worldwide.
Aims
The idea of MHFA is that people should be taught how to perform basic ‘first aid’ for those exhibiting signs of mental distress, just as they are commonly taught first aid for physical problems. MHFA improves mental health literacy and helps people to recognise the signs and symptoms of someone with mental health problems; to respond to various mental health crises, engage with, support and signpost people to appropriate professional help.
Learning Outcomes
MHFA aims to help participants to:
  • preserve life
  • provide help to prevent the mental health problem or crisis developing into a more serious state
  • promote the recovery of good mental health
  • provide comfort to a person experiencing distress
  • promote understanding of mental health issues

Date: 14 and 15 July 2015 (participants need to attend both days)
